At Kaupang in Vestfold county, Norway, lie the remains of Sciringes heal - Norway's first town. The University of Oslo, Institute for Archaeology, Conservation and Historical Studies (IAKH) has organised the large excavations that ran over three years, from 2000 till 2002. A smaller research excavation was conducted in Kaupang's harbour area in 2003.
These excavations are now finished, but the post-excavation work will continue until 2007. Severals scholars are now working on analyses of both the artefact material and different environmental archaeological samples. The results from the post-excavation work will be published in a series of books, the first of which will be available in 2007 (see NEWS this page).
